THE PROCESS
• Creating a plaque in metal begins with a clay relief designed and sculpted by Martha Cawley.
• A hard resin replica is made from the clay design, which is sent to a foundry in York, PA, USA.
• Here each piece is created using one of the oldest reproduction methods, sand casting.
• Each plaque starts with a negative impression made in a bed of sand.
This impression is filled with molten aluminum metal that becomes the positive form of the design. After it cools, it is removed from the sand and a new impression is made for the next plaque.
• Finally, the plaque is polished to a bright finish and a patina is applied to emphasize the detail.
